My thirteen year old self sought a great deal of salvation in Enid Coleslaw - impulsive, cynical, weird, bitter, critical, confused and self-doubting. She was probably my first style icon, both in the Daniel Clowes graphic novel and the Terry Zwigoff film.
Growing up in Glasgow, I didn't know much about Daniel Clowes, just that this mystical male cartoonist seemed to completely understand myself and outsider teenage girls everywhere. I recently found out that he is based in Oakland, California. full circle or what.
Oakland Museum of California has an exhibition running from April 14th to August 12th 2012 entitled "Modern Cartoonist: the Art of Daniel Clowes" - on the first Sunday of the month, admission to the museum is free "totally bitchin'"
